Have you heard of Pride? What have you heard about it? Do you know how it began? In the US?

LGBTQ+ people have long been the targets of police harassment and violence. Until 1969 it was illegal to be LGBTQ+ in Canada. It’s important to remember that even though it was against the law to be LGBTQ+, queer people have always been in the territory we currently call Canada.

Can you imagine what it might have felt like to a queer person when it was still illegal? Aside from laws, how else have LGBTQ+ people been discriminated against? In schools? In society?

This cellphilm was created for use in the Grade 8 Social Studies classroom in New Brunswick, and seeks to address the specific curriculum outcomes:

Examine and develop a general concept of culture:

o 2.1.5 identify various forms of material culture that societies use to express culture

o 2.1.6 recognize that culture is dynamic and shaped by many forces
