Exploring Gender Identity (Grade 1)

Updated: Aug 8, 2020

Gender identity is how a person sees themselves – some people feel like a boy, some people feel like a girl, some people feel like a boy AND a girl, and some people feel like neither. Sometimes a helpful word to use when someone feels different than a boy or a girl is the word non-binary. Of course, there are many different ways to be a boy. There are many different ways to be a girl. There are also many different ways to be non-binary. Too many ways than we might fit in one video.

This cellphilm was created for use in the Grade 1 You & Your World classroom in New Brunswick, and seeks to address the specific curriculum outcomes: "1.1.2 demonstrate an understanding of the similarity and diversity of social and cultural groups;" and "1.4.1 demonstrate an understanding that the way people live in their community evolves over time."
