Exploring Different Kinds of Families

Updated: Aug 8, 2020

In this video, we explore families. Of course, there are many different kinds of families. Too many than can fit in this video.

Some families include children. Some families do not include children. Some families with children have a mom and a dad. Some families with children have two moms. Some families with children have two dads. Some families are blended, where multiple families come together to make a new family. Some families with children include foster parents. Some families have a single mom or a single dad. And some families are made up of grandparents or aunties and uncles and children. Some families include people who are in love with each other, who do not have children. And some families are chosen, which mean that the members of the family are not related by blood, but they love each other and are there for each other just like any other family. Family is about loving, respecting, and supporting one another even when it is not easy to do so.

This cellphilm was created for use in the Kindergarten You & Your World classroom in New Brunswick, and seeks to address the specific curriculum outcomes:

Students as Individuals:

K.1.1 demonstrate an understanding of themselves as unique and special;

K.1.3 identify needs and wants that are common to all children;

k.1.5 recognize that families (local, national, and global) have varied traditions, rituals, and celebrations
